Christmas traditions are long held within the Polish community. These traditions stem from both religious and superstitious beliefs. In Eastern Europe, superstition is a part of the culture. In Poland, superstition is a major part of the Christmas holiday.
Polish Christmas, Christmas Eve and Wigilia
The Polish Christmas season begins with a traditional house cleaning. Poles clean the windows outside of their houses or apartments. They also clean the inside of their houses, making certain to eliminate all the dirt for the upcoming season. Poles believe that a dirty house during Christmas will remain dirty all year long.
Much like Americans use the Farmers' Almanac, the Polish community predicts the weather at Christmastime. The weather during Christmas forecasts the weather for the following year. When it snows on Christmas, it is a sign of happiness. But if it rains, the following year will be rainy.
