As travelers drive into the quaint town of Natchitoches, Louisiana, they take a step into history. The oldest settlement in the Louisiana purchase, Natchitoches was established in 1714 and history tells us the first French settlers arrived as early as 1699. Natchitoches is home to historic plantations, New Orleans-style architecture, and true Southern hospitality.
The City of Natchitoches
Historic downtown, which runs in front of Cane River Lake, serves as the setting for the annual Christmas Festival of Lights, a tradition that has grown from simple town decoration in the early 1900s into a shimmering, reflective light show and fun-filled festival for the entire family.
Cane River Lake backdrops Front Street where the shops, restaurants, and homes that run along its original brick road mirror bits of the New Orleans French Quarter, or rather, more accurately, the French Quarter reflects a similar style. Visitors and natives sit on their wrought-iron-framed balconies, listening to the rhythmic hooves of horse-drawn carriages and the soulful sounds of local bands.
