“'Tis the season to be jolly”, or so they used to say. Nowadays, Christmas is viewed by the authorities as a source of immense peril. All those people having fun and being carefree is extremely dangerous in an epoch in which mundane risks are inflated to irrational proportions.
Christmas in a culture of fear
Bristol Council, for example, has worried that the festivities will lead to accidents in the home. They have issued a list of health and safety advice such as, “If your tree lights don't work or are damaged, get yourself a new set”, and “Always read the instructions attached to decorations or novelty products such as Christmas crackers or Santa's sacks as they will give important safety information.”
It seems that even the act of pulling a cracker, normally mastered by a child of three, is now wrought with danger.
